Gundtred
robdruid2.jpg
Gundtdred was born in the village of Gundviir located along the Ingdar river. Gundtred's father was very angry about his birth, as he was not the father, and his mother had no clue about how it happened (actually, the goddess Brigantia sent one of her clerics during the night to cast a spell on her, when she awoke she was pregnant). Upon his birth, his hair was blonde, his eyes were blue. This confirmed the fears so he was taken to the forest of Emerald Spire and left there by his father. The Druid order of the region took him in and raised him. Very early in life Gundtred experienced dreams in which a woman (sometimes wearing a crown, and somtimes wearing a breatplate and carrying a spear) would talk to him. Sometimes he would ask her questions or vise versa, sometimes he would ask her for things. Whenever he awoke, it all seemed real. One day he asked the leader of his order of this, and was told that he was one of the goddess' favored or chosen. This was both supprise and shock to him. Upon reaching his 25th birthday, he had a dream that night. One of the temples of the goddess being raided and all of the preists being killed. Then a barbaric warrior appeared, killing all of the theives (except for one, who made off with an artifact of great power and wealth). The goddess then asked him to find this artifact and return it to the temple. She gave him limited knowledge of the Barbarian, and sent him to find Sven Kullsson, as he had a similar quest.

Mirumoto Kenzo
MK.jpg
Mirumoto Kenzo was born the last son of Mirumoto Junzo and his wife Kachiko in a secondary branch (FYI: Clans have the ruling branch, the secondary branches, and minor branches) of the Mirumoto Clan. As expected Kenzo began training in the ways of the warrior shortly after beginning to walk and talk. Kenzo never really got a chance to know his two eldest brothers that were 12 & 15 years senior to him. While Kenzo was still a young child a bloody conflict between the Mirumoto Clan and another Clan broke out. The fight was bloody and ruthless, but the Mirumoto won . . . at great cost. About half the clan’s men and third of it women were killed. Among those slain where both Kenzo’s older brothers and an old sister. Kenzo’s father would quietly mourn his lost sons and as consequence constantly use them as a measuring stick for Kenzo.
If Junzo has been a little bit colder and Kachiko a little less nurturing, the coldness of the household probably would have broken the spirit of the little boy. Fortunately those rare moments of acknowledgement were enough to drive on Kenzo. Nevertheless Kenzo was driven to out do the fond memories of his late brothers. He would spend half the day constant exercising and sword practice so that he could out do his warrior brother, and the afternoons with his tutors or observing the local court so that he could out do his courtier brother. By the time of his gempuku (coming of age), Kenzo has begun to escape the shadow of his brothers.
However, outdoing the glories of his brother would prove a little bit of a challenge. After the war the Mirumoto clan had arranged several marriages with other clans for alliances. The clan’s prestige and new lands it had made it a desirable clan to join. The clan was flush with the sisters-in-laws that were skilled at administration. Pushed out an opportunity to be a shining peacetime administrator, "Kenzo had no chance to show his skills at fighting in
a honorable war". In the time that it took for Kenzo to reach adulthood, the Mirumoto had secured it hold on its lands and acquired many alliances in the process. War was no where on the horizon.
Faced with limited choices Kenzo decided to take the last remaining option for glory, a musha shugyo (warrior pilgrimage). He would go out and travel the world at large. He would learn as much as possible and then return home to teach his skills to the next generation. Kenzo feels that it would not be too hard to parlay his noble status and the position as a revered sensei into a governorship. Kenzo was immensely pleased when the clan daimyo agreed to his request.
On was on the eve of Kenzo’s departure that his life intercepted with that of Twirling Cricket. Before he was to leave Junzo decided to hold a festival in his son’s honor. During the ceremony everyone was surprised when Junzo gave him cherished keepsake of the family. For over 5 generations the men of Kenzo’s family had worn a headband into battle. Ever since then it had soaked up the determined sweat of many ancestors and the blood of their many enemies. In every case the bearers of this headband either died glorious deaths or returned home safely. Shortly after Kenzo received the gift a horrible event occurred. A young geisha in training accidentally tripped and spilled scalding hot tea all over the attending clan daimyo. The daimyo was about to take the young woman’s head when Kenzo begged that he be allowed to punish her. The daimyo’s was pleased with Kenzo’s skillful words that pointed out that a quick death was too good for her. Such a soft woman would suffer much more slowly and still inevitably die if she was forced to join him on his pilgrimage. While Kenzo’s words did have some truth, he had seen a golden opportunity to gain an excellent roadside companion and seized it. The daimyo decided that the honor of punishing the young woman would be his departing present to Kenzo. This skillful political maneuver pleased everyone who witnessed it. Those that were duped were impressed by Kenzo’s devotion, and those were not were impressed by Kenzo’s finesse in netting such a useful retainer.
For several months Kenzo has been journeying about steadily westward. He has always had a mild interest in the western barbarian lands. Plus warriors who have studied in the esteemed dojo of his homeland are a dime a dozen. An understanding of gaijin and their fighting techniques would undoubtedly be a more unique asset.
